Yesterday I was reading in Chowhound about a new Phở restaurant that has opened in La Mesa. I was very happy that someone would be courageous enough to open a Phở restaurant in the East County and I couldn't wait to try it out. My culinarily challenged husband had no idea what he was in for when he said it was up to me where we had lunch today.
Check it out. Oh, yeah and they have wi-fi
The first thing that really hit me was the cleanliness.
We started with an appetizer Khai Vi, of Crispy Vietnamese Egg Rolls Cha Gio. They are truly crispy and delicious.
Plenty of meat.
We were just munching away on them not really knowing what the noodles, lettuce and basil were all about. I finally asked and we were told to wrap the egg roll in the lettuce along with some noodles and basil then dip in the sauce, wow!!! was that even better.
There were a couple of items I wanted to try, like the Bun Bo Hue, the spicy hue beef noodle that KirkK likes so much, but I was craving Phở. I ordered the Phở Thit Nuong which is charbroiled meat with the choices of pork, beef or chicken, I chose the beef. Regular bowl $5.50. It came with the standard accompaniments, basil, bean sprouts, sliced jalapeño and fresh lime.
The beef recipe is one that was developed by a Korean man.
Beautiful broth that the owner had worked for years to perfect. His efforts have paid off. I've had some pretty good Phở but this one beats them all hands down.
Beautiful clean, clear broth. The noodles in the bottom of the bowl were so good and still had lots of body to them.
All the goodies added. I'm in heaven right about now.
Stan ordered the Charbroiled Beef Com Bo Nuong which turned out to be Filet Mignon cooked French style.
Charbroiled to perfection. Nothing was left for the doggie bag. Good thing I snagged a few pieces while I could.
To our pleasant surprise we were brought a dessert, a hot dessert. All I know about it is that it is drinkable and had lemongrass.
I'll find out more about it when we go back. Believe me, we will be back.
All Stan could say through his whole meal was, "this is so good" I don't think he'll be so hesitant to try new places any more. Well, we'll see, he is kinda set in his ways. ;-)
We were fortunate enough to meet and talk with the owners Minh and Her. Minh has worked many years perfecting his recipes. Some recipes, like the Phở he has worked on for years, and some recipes he uses are 30 years old. For the beverages he prefers to use Thai style drinks. Some beverages offered besides Vietnamese coffee are, lattes, fresh brewed shaken teas which are mixed and shaken in martini mixer.
Minh and Her are a delightful and charming couple. We were made to feel very welcome and had excellent and friendly service.
See you again soon, and thanks again for a memorable lunch.
